Environmental and Society Manifesto
Office Depot champions environmental and societal change, and believes that responsible business is where we respect and nurture our planet, our community, and our people with the actions we take. We strive to be environmentally accountable and advocate for better sustainable principles to protect our planet.
We have pledged to reduce our carbon emissions against our 2021 carbon baseline by 50% by 2030 and increase our social value by 50% against the 2021 baseline by 2030.
Our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint
Understanding carbon emissions
A substantial portion of our carbon emissions fall under Scope 3, particularly Category 1, which encompasses purchased goods and services.
These emissions largely stem from our suppliers and the transportation of our customers’ goods to their final destinations. So, we recognise the critical role these factors play in our overall carbon footprint.
Supplier collaboration and sustainable procurement
We’ve identified that 15% of our supplier base is responsible for the majority of these emissions. To address this, we’re actively collaborating with our suppliers to find innovative solutions to significantly reduce emissions in the years ahead.
Plus, we’re implementing a sustainable procurement management system to enhance data collection and management, enabling closer collaboration with our suppliers to achieve emission reduction goals.
Reduction of Scope 1 and 2 emissions
In addition to tackling Scope 3 emissions, we’re committed to reducing our Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 21% over the next two years. To achieve this, we’ve implemented a range of initiatives, including the introduction of ISO50001, upgrading lighting systems, modernising machinery, and enhancing metering across our facilities.
Methodology for carbon emissions calculation
To ensure accuracy and transparency across our sustainability efforts, we adhere to a rigorous methodology for calculating our carbon emissions footprint. Our data follows the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Accounting Standard, revised in 2004 and amended in 2013.
This methodology serves as a cornerstone of our commitment to environmental accountability and guides our actions towards a more sustainable future.
